Shearman & Sterling strengthens ME practice

Shearman & Sterling will solidify its standing in the Middle East and in private equity and project development and finance with the return of MARWAN ELARABY as managing partner-Middle East. Elaraby, a former capital markets partner in the firm’s New York office, served most recently as managing director at Citadel Capital. He will be based in the firm’s Abu Dhabi office, where he previously worked with the firm as a project development and finance associate from 1996-1998.

Since leaving the firm, Elaraby has been with Citadel Capital in Cairo. He also served as executive director in EFG-Hermes’ investment banking group, where he worked as an investment banker. In recent years, Elaraby has focused on sourcing and executing investments in a variety of sectors, with a particular emphasis on energy. Among his accomplishments is leading the team that conceived, planned, negotiated, and financed the Egyptian Refining Company’s Mostorod Refinery—a USD3.7 billion investment that is Africa’s largest-ever private sector project.
