New association and partner hire for firm

King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin announced last month its association with the Law Office of Majed Almarshad in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.The new Riyadh office, which opened on 27 January 2014, was established by Majed Almarshad and Matthew Cavanagh.

Majed Almarshad has served as a senior corporate lawyer in King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin’s Dubai and London offices since 2011.  Previously, Almarshad has held legal counsel positions at Ashurst in Dubai, Chadbourne & Parke in New York, SAMBA Financial Group in Riyadh and the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA).  In addition to a degree in law from King Saud University, Majed also holds LL.M’s from Cornell Law School and Boston University.

Matthew Cavangah has been appointed as a partner in the Energy & Infrastructure group as part of the firm’s investment into Energy & Infrastructure and Investment Funds in the MENA region. Cavangah, who has previously lived and worked in Riyadh, specialises in Project Finance, Energy & Infrastructure and Investment Funds. He has worked on major projects for over ten years in the GCC (particularly in Saudi Arabia), broader MENA region, South America, Australasia and Europe. He focuses on the petrochemicals, oil & gas, power, mining and infrastructure  sectors, acting for both sponsors (both private sector and government) and lenders. Cavangah previously worked at Linklaters and Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher & Flom, and was most recently global general counsel and partner to a major North American and European investment manager, Christofferson, Robb & Company investing in structured credit and renewable energy strategies.
