Squire Patton Boggs boosts partnership

Squire Patton Boggs announced that Lindsay Fainé (Tax Strategy & Benefits) and Doug Smith (Corporate) have been promoted to partnership in the Abu Dhabi and Dubai offices respectively. In addition, the firm appointed Andrew Herring as partner in the London office.

Lindsay Fainé assists clients with a broad range of tax planning and tax policy matters. In the tax planning portion of her practice, Lindsay regularly advises clients regarding compliance with the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regulations regarding partnerships, sovereign immunity status of foreign governments, US and foreign withholding tax issues relating to cross-border cash flows, tax-efficient investor exit mechanisms, and foreign ownership of US real estate. She has advised fund sponsors and foreign institutional investors regarding the legal and tax aspects of structuring and participating in investment funds that make real estate and corporate securities investments in the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. Lindsay also helps foreign governments maintain tax-exempt status in the United States and regularly participates in the negotiation, drafting, and review of partnership and limited liability company agreements. Within the public policy area, Lindsay concentrates on US regulatory and legislative initiatives involving federal tax issues, with a particular emphasis on matters affecting investment funds and foreign investors in the US market. She regularly advises foreign institutional investors on the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and has advised FATCA partner countries regarding intergovernmental agreements.

Douglas G. Smith has more than 30 years of experience in Middle East, as well as North America and Asia, Smith’s main areas of practice include corporate law, M&A, private equity, finance, corporate restructurings, joint ventures as well as corporate governance and regulatory matters. His practice has involved him in transactional work in numerous jurisdictions in the Middle East including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain as well as in East and Southeast Asia, encompassing Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, India, as well as other nations. 

Smith has been recognized for his corporate-commercial and M&A expertise on numerous occasions by Who's Who Legal and Legal 500.  Doug frequently speaks publically and writes on corporate and commercial law matters. He is a former lecturer at the University of Hong Kong as well as a guest lecturer at the City University of Hong Kong. 


Andrew Herring, a well-known rail and transportation sector lawyer, will join the firm’s Real Estate Practice, working with the Global Infrastructure and Constr‎uction groups. He joins from DWF.  

Herring specialises in advising public and private sector clients internationally on the structuring, procurement and delivery of major commercial and financing transactions and infrastructure projects in the transportation sector. Key recent experience includes advising on PPP/P3 transactions and on concession agreements in the global heavy rail and urban metro and light rail sectors, as well as logistics and port infrastructure contracts. Herring has extensive experience of advising in the UK and on international and cross-border projects throughout the US, Europe and the Middle East. Among his recent work highlights are advising a leading US public transportation authority in relation to its new commuter rail contract, which introduced a number of innovative structures that are firsts for the US passenger rail market; advising a government authority in the Middle East in relation to a major metro system; advising on the ongoing procurement and delivery of new metro and light rail lines in the UK; and advising on the key legal agreements underpinning the delivery of the rebuilt Birmingham New Street station, and associated city centre regeneration.
