QATAR – Qatari attorney general talks anti-corruption and rule of law in London

THE attorney general of the Gulf state of Qatar, His Excellency Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, recently addressed a distinguished audience at a Qatar Law Forum symposium on the Rule of Law and anti-corruption hosted by Roger Gifford, the Lord Mayor of London.

The Qatar Law Forum brings together global leaders in law from around the world to discuss the challenge of achieving a global commitment to the Rule of Law and related issues of international legal and economic significance.

Qatar is notable in the Arab World for its drive in tackling corruption and His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani’s commitment to the strong Rule of Law both in Qatar and beyond its borders. This commitment was recently exemplified by Dr Al Marri’s appointment by the UN as a Special Advocate on Stolen Asset Recovery and the opening of a Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre in Doha by the UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.

In recognition of the need to move beyond dialogue and instigate change on the ground, the Qatar Law Forum is involved in the coordination and assistance in a number of Rule of Law projects and the symposium held at Mansion House, the office of the Lord Mayor of London, is the first in a series of events to be held outside of Qatar. A focus of the discussion was international cooperation and tackling global anti-corruption issues in partnership.
